Gehry and (fer) Making Their Mark In Watts
From designing a Make It Right home in New Orleans to projects like the Pasadena Playhouse and Jazz Bakery Theater in Los Angeles, Frank Gehry latest venture takes him to one of LA’s most historically underserved communities: Watts. Gehry Partners has partnered with Inglewood-based (fer) Studio, serving as Executive Architect, to design a new campus for the Children’s Institute (CII), a non-profit dedicated to providing vital social services.
The 2-acre, 50,000-square-foot campus will be located at 1522 East 102nd Street, just steps from the iconic Watts Towers and what was once downtown Watts. The campus will feature a wide array of spaces, including a multi-purpose room, an art room, a kitchen, activity spaces, a tech lab, sports facilities, offices, counseling rooms, and observation areas. According to (fer) Studio’s Chris Mercier, the project reflects a collaborative effort to create a welcoming and functional hub that serves the community’s needs.
